If you live in Washington D.C. or Baltimore, you should think about covering your automobile in bubble wrap. That’s because Allstate Insurance places both cities at the bottom of its safest driving city study.

Allstate Insurance released its America’s Best Drivers Report, which ranks America’s 200 largest cities in terms of automobile collision frequency — according to Allstate claims data — to identify the cities with the safest drivers. At the top of the list is Fort Collins, Colorado with 14.5 average years between collisions. In comparison, “Washington’s drivers get in a collision every 5.1 years, meaning that they have a 96 percent higher chance of being in an accident than the average American driver,” states Bloomberg.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the General Manager of AYT Auto Services in Washington, Jim Harris, says, “It’s the way the city’s laid out, the way the traffic’s set up…it’s pretty harrowing.”

According to The Huffington Post, cities located in “the Rocky Mountains and Appalachia were found to have the nation’s safest drivers.”

The reason behind all of these accidents? According to the Senior Vice President of Allstate’s Claim Organization, Mike Roche: “Human error is the biggest cause of accidents. It is vital for us to educate drivers across the country on the importance of being tolerant and attentive behind the wheel.”
